“The future belongs to those who understand that doing more with less is compassionate, prosperous, and enduring, and thus more intelligent, even competitive.” – Paul Hawken
I heard an herbalist say recently that being green is not about conserving water or recycling plastic. It is about not buying things, or being totally self-sufficient. This may not be reality with the lives most of us live, but it is something to ponder. I hope that most people share my thought that buying new furniture and taking your old furniture to the dump is irresponsible. Before throwing out your “garbage,” be certain that someone does not think of it as useful.
Some of my favorite non-consuming trends include:
– Give your unwanted items to local charities
– Post your unwanted items on Craigslist or ebay in addition to finding items you need. Did you know it is free to post to Craigslist?
– Find local recyclers for disposing of broken computers and electronics.
– Discuss doing all Christmas shopping at yard sales (or goodwill, etc) this year with your family. You’ll be amazed at the great buys and how much fun it can be.
