So here we are again this holiday season when frugal is fashionable. Last year we talked about gift giving from garage sales, and other thrifty ways to save and reuse. This year, consider focusing on boosting your local economy by buying gifts at Farmers Markets or local small businesses that you care about.
It turns out that “for every $100 spent at a non-locally owned business, only $13 remains in the local economy. For that same $100 spent at a locally owned business, $43 remains in the local economy” (LocalFirstAZ.com). If you can buy not only gifts, but everyday use items at locally owned businesses, that can really make a difference.
Another avenue to support is small businesses that offer unique, home-made items. When the unemployment rate is high, our economy strengthens when people start their own businesses as opposed to competing for the few jobs available. ETSY.COM was a great find that offers a plethora of unique gifts.
Please add to my blog to give other great holiday gift ideas. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and holiday season.
